To take advantage of the rough lumber resource produced by numerous portable sawmills in the region partners surnamed COULTER and WARNER opened a planer mill in the late 1950s. Warner sold out to Coulter, and in 1969 the company went into bankruptcy. It was then acquired by Ojar Ukass and Fritz Zehnder, who renamed the company NORTH STAR PLANING CO. LTD. Various changes in partnership arrangements involved Leo Bukovnik Sr., Albin Schager and others.
Leo Bukovnik Jr. joined the company in 1986 and under his leadership the company expanded the lumber retail business into a complete building supply and hardware store.
